Yahoo Finance's Akiko Fujita breaks down the top stories around the world.

Video transcript

AKIKO FUJITA: In our worldview today, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga visiting the White House today. And you're looking at a live view between him, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris over in DC. He is the first foreign leader to visit the White House, and China expected to be at the center of the discussions today. Suga reportedly set to announce a $2 billion commitment to work with the US on alternatives to Huawei's 5G network. Biden and Suga are also expected to discuss human rights concerns in Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The two are scheduled to hold a press conference this afternoon, where they are expected to issue a joint statement on Taiwan. That would be the first time they've done that since 1969.

Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai has been sentenced to one year in jail for his involvement in the city's pro-democracy protests. Lai was convicted of unlawful assembly earlier this month, following charges he helped organize the 2019 demonstrations protesting China's growing grip on the city. The sentences of two other activists were suspended on Friday. Lai's imprisonment is a symbolic victory for China, as Beijing continues to crack down on Hong Kong. Just last month, Chinese officials overhauled the electoral system there to give Beijing more control.

And the UK is preparing to say its final goodbye to Prince Philip. The funeral for the Duke of Edinburgh is set to begin at St. George's Chapel at 10:00 Eastern on Saturday. Concerns of coronavirus infections have limited the gathering to just 30 people at Windsor Castle. Prince Harry, who flew in from the US, will also be among those attending. The Duke's coffin set to be placed on a modified Land Rover that you just saw there that he helped design. Prince Philip's funeral marks the official end of a period of national mourning in the UK, although the royal family will continue to observe two weeks of mourning.
