Tech Support: Beats Studio Buds review

Yahoo finance's Dan Howley reviews the new Beats Studio Buds.

Video transcript

- Let's get to the tech support this week. Apple bringing new headphones to the market, the Beats Studio Buds, what do you think of them?

DAN HOWLEY: Yeah, so I actually have them here, the Beats Studio Buds. These are $149. They're new obviously to the Beats program. What really sets them apart is that price and the fact that for that you get active-noise canceling technology, and that's something that you really don't normally get with something at this low price.

You also get five hours of listening time. The charging case, though not wireless, does give you extra power for when you do run low, and it'll them very quickly. They're incredibly comfortable. They have three tips. They're also sweat and water-resistant, so I think that's really important.

But they're not the only game in town. There's obviously Apple's own AirPods Pro. Those go for 249, so $100 more. They also have active-noise cancellation, 4.5 hours of listening time. They do have that wireless charging case, though. And they're also sweat and water-resistant. But the thing that really sets them apart from the Studio Buds is that they offer things like spatial audio, the ability to pair with your iCloud account, and the ability to open them up and once they're paired with your iCloud account, use them across your Apple devices without having to repair them over and over again.

But the Studio Buds also work very well with Android, and that's one of really their benefits. Beyond that, in the same category there's the Pixel Buds. Those go for 179. They don't have active-noise canceling. They have passive-noise canceling, so not fantastic. Five hours of battery life though and three tips. And they have sweat and water resistance. They also have a wireless charging case if that's something that you're really interested in. And if you're an Android user, it's really going to be one of your best bets.

If you're a Samsung user, which is really [INAUDIBLE] Samsung and Apple in the US. They have the Galaxy Buds Pro, and those are 199. They offer much of the same features as the Studio Buds. But they also have Dolby Atmos head tracking audio, which is similar to the spatial audio that Apple offers with the AirPods Pro.

But really what it comes down to is I think the Beat Studio Buds are a fantastic device. I've been wearing them while I go out running. The active-noise cancellation it's surprisingly good, especially for what you're going to pay. So if you're really a user who's either an iPhone fan or an Android fan and you want a new pair of headphones but don't want to pay that 249 premium for those AirPods Pro, I really think the Studio Buds are a great choice.

- Dan, if you had to pick one for you personally, which one would you pick?

DAN HOWLEY: I mean, for me personally, the AirPods just fit so much better than everything else in the market that I would go with them. But I also am comfortable spending the 249. If you're not, I think the Studio Buds are really the second best.

- All right. Dan Howley, Thanks so much.
