Stocks mixed after earnings, European Central Bank rate hike

Yahoo Finance's Jared Blikre breaks down how stocks and international markets are performing on Thursday following earnings results and a surprise rate increase from the ECB.

Video transcript

BRIAN CHEUNG: A lot of stuff happened this morning. We got some earnings reports. We got jobless claims data. And of course, we got a big announcement out of the European Central Bank. Let's bring in Yahoo Finance's Jared Blikre for more on all of the international market action as well. Jared.

JARED BLIKRE: Yeah, so let's start off with the euro because you might first notice here, just sitting above parity right there. If you can book a flight out there, you're going to get a good discount for your dollar. Now, here's what happened with this morning's meeting. Lagarde frontloaded the rate increase 50 basis points. They said they were only going to do 25 and 50 in September. Now it's only 25 in September. And there's also a new bond buying facility, but Lagarde didn't have too many details on it. So guess what? Right back down to the unchanged line.

Let's put a longer term chart of the euro. And you can see, a pretty slow, steady decline there, down 13% for the year. It doesn't seem like a lot, but that is a pretty big move. Now, I want to check out the sector action for today. And we see consumer discretionary, one of the worst sectors off in the year in terms of performance. That is up 1%, followed by healthcare, materials, industrials, and real estate. As you can see, all of those in the green. Crude oil back below $100. And so, energy is down about 3%.

I want to check out some of our leaders, and not looking too bullish here. Liquid is a aggregate bond government ETF. That's up 1%. IBB is biotech. KWEB is Chinese stock. And let's just focus on some of those names right now. You can see a lot of greens on your screen. Pinduoduo up 4 and 1/2%.

I want to check on some of our other sentiment markets. And guess what? Tesla in the Ark Innovation ETF holdings, that is up 6% after earnings. We're going to be talking about that today. And Brian, I'm going to send it back to your lonesome.

BRIAN CHEUNG: [LAUGHS] Don't remind me that I'm alone. By the way, I love the fact that you referenced LQD. We don't reference those bond ETFs too often.

JARED BLIKRE: I appreciate that.

BRIAN CHEUNG: Appreciate it. Thanks so much, Jared.
