Saints coach Sean Payton on evaluating Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill and his parents' garage sale habit

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton joins Terez Paylor & Charles Robinson on behalf of Zebra Technologies to discuss how he evaluates QBs Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill going forward, and relates a funny story from his youth about why picking a QB is like going sofa shopping at a garage sale. Sean Payton joins Yahoo Sports on behalf of Zebra Technologies.

TEREZ PAYLOR: Sean, you were very complimentary of Jameis on "Good Morning Football," and we can't let you get out of here without at least addressing that a little bit. Sean, when it comes down to making that decision between James and Taysom, what do you think would be, if that's what it ends up being, what are the deciding factors there? What do you care about?

SEAN PAYTON: Those guys are going to just go out and play. Uniquely this year, there were no preseason games. And we know the players. You know, I think there's a fan base that's like, what are the Saints going to do at quarterback, what are the Saints going to do at quarterback? And, man, there's there's a vision here. We were two moves ahead of them, you know, relative to where we're going. That's the good thing. Because it is a unique year. And there'll be some risks now with some of these movements.

My parents always, man, they loved going garage saling. And that was their thing that they did on Saturdays and Sundays. They got the highlighter out and they got in their car, station wagon, they drove to these homes and they'd come back with a new couch, but it wasn't new.

[LAUGHS]

TEREZ PAYLOR: All right.

SEAN PAYTON: We had seven different couches when I was a kid.

TEREZ PAYLOR: Seven!

SEAN PAYTON: Every other weekend there was a new couch. We were lifting one out and then we were bringing one in. And don't get me wrong, like modest, garage sale and coming in out of station wagon. And you put the couch in the room, you sit back and watch TV and then all of a sudden, it was missing like half a leg.

[LAUGHS]

Don't draw the analogy or the conclusion that every one of these quarterbacks is going to fit nice and cleanly with every one of these plays. You know, that's the value in this past season. For Jameis evaluating us and for us evaluating him, because a lot then goes into the money and the commitment and all those other things. But yeah, you don't want a couch tilting on you.

CHARLES ROBINSON: It'd be a nightmare to have seven different quarterbacks.

[LAUGHS]

SEAN PAYTON: Hope springs eternal. And man, they'd go out that next weekend, and I'm one of four kids though, but it would be on a Sunday and they'd be like, hey, we're going to need your help. I'm like, oh, man, we got another sofa.

[LAUGHS]

This one--

TEREZ PAYLOR: That's great.

SEAN PAYTON: --This one is the L-shaped sofa. And so, man, it came in, I was like, oh, this has got a chance, you know. And then flip a cushion over had been left up against a heater, the hole was burned, you know. There's a reason is was on sale.

[LAUGHS]

TEREZ PAYLOR: That's awesome. I think that really hits home your point, man. But the reason you're on, is to tell us about Zebra Technologies. Because I know Charles and I are both fascinated by it. As a coach, how has this added to your preparation from a practice perspective? And also a preparation perspective for you guys? How do you use it?

SEAN PAYTON: All right, so real quick. It's a partner with the NFL. When we see the Next Gen statistics on TV, 21 miles an hour, when we're getting this added information, it's a plus for obviously, the broadcast teams. My exposure initially was player safety driven relative to our long training camp practices. Look, it's a chip in each player's shoulder pad, but it's not unusual. Every one of us has had barcodes on items that we purchased at the store and we swipe and it gives us a price. That's Zebra. That's, I mean, when I said that Zebra, that's their code, hence the term Zebra with the black and white stripes.

And now enter it into the sports market and we put these chips in the player's shoulder pads an arena that's marked with an invisible fence and we can gather data and use it in a lot of different ways. How far the players traveled today. At what type of rate. What type of speed. Are we close to over-training this player? So you're gathering this, and it's easy, back in the day, you'd say, well, let's just back off today. Well, what does that really mean?

And now it allows you to get the personnel on the field quicker than having to chart it every time. You know, hey, jersey number, Tampa Bay's going to play three tight ends in different packages. But I also see it helping us relative to officiating the game and making it an aid for the officials. Because these chips are in the football right now. These chips are in every ball where we using. This is going to be at some point, a way that we see across the plane, it went out of bounds. We punt the ball out of bounds. That's the craziest thing I've ever seen, when we punt a ball high and out of bounds, one guy starts walking.

[LAUGHS]

And then someone says, right there. I think the technology is there to begin to help us with some of those challenges.

TEREZ PAYLOR: All right, Sean, this was great, man. Thank you so much for joining us. Hopefully we can do this again sometime.

SEAN PAYTON: Absolutely, any time. Thank you, guys.
