Indiana to hire Mike Woodson as next head basketball coach

Yahoo Sports College Reporter Pete Thamel gives you the latest on Indiana’s men’s basketball coaching search, which seems to have come to an end with New York Knicks assistant Mike Woodson. Former Ohio State head coach Thad Matta will join Woodson at Indiana in an administration role to help ease the transition to college basketball.

PETE THAMEL: With Gonzaga chasing Indiana's perfection from four decades ago here in Indianapolis on Sunday, the Hoosiers themselves again are restarting to chase old glories. Indiana is expected to hire Mike Woodson, the former NBA coach and longtime NBA assistant, and a former Hoosier star, as the next head coach. It's a move for Indiana that's awash with nostalgia. Woodson has no college coaching experience of any significance, and he'll be entering an environment in the Big Ten which is as difficult of a league as it's ever been.

Soon after Indiana made the move, they also announced that they're bringing in Thad Matta, the former Ohio State coach, in administration. This is to counter any inexperiences that Woodson has in his position, coming into college and navigating that space for the first time. So essentially, Indiana's having a Woodson-Matta combo to help run the program and help revive that program's relevance.

Indiana hasn't been to the NCAA tournament since 2016. They probably would have made the 2020 tournament, but the 2020 tournament didn't happen. In that time, when the program has been stuck in neutral, the rest of the Big Ten has gotten a lot better. Michigan has surged to the forefront with Juwan Howard, Chris Holtmann has established Ohio State as a top team in the league, and wire-to-wire, the Big Ten has built itself into one of the best basketball conference brands.

Indiana has made its play to try to get back and be competitive in that league. It will be Mike, Woodson it will be Thad Matta, and it will not be boring. This is Pete Thammel, live in Indianapolis for Yahoo Sports.
