Argo will raise money from US investors by selling American Depositary Shares (ADS), an instrument commonly used by overseas companies looking to tap the US market.
When Sir Nicholas Goodison became chair of the London Stock Exchange at the unusually early age of 41, many members thought this tall, gangling figure was far too intellectual for the job. Goodison, who died on July 6 aged 87, deftly steered negotiations that culminated, in 1986, in the deregulatory measures known as the Big Bang. At the time, the City was hedged about with tight exchange controls and hampered in its international business by the endemic weakness of sterling.
