Less than 24 hours after Hurricane Milton made landfall, Duke Energy Florida is announcing estimated times of restoration will be issued for all customers impacted by the storm on the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 11.
Two devastating storms have hit the southeastern U.S. in the last two weeks, and Duke Energy has been at the center of both of them. The North Carolina-based utility was just getting close to restoring the last of the more than two million power outages caused by Hurricane Helene when Hurricane Milton slammed Florida on Wednesday—forcing another huge mobilization to turn the lights back on at nearly one million homes. Duke stock has fallen 2.1% since before Helene hit, about in line with the overall utility industry, despite the large costs it is incurring.
Duke Energy Florida is reporting approximately 850,000 power outages, as of 8 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, after Hurricane Milton hit Florida as a Category 3 storm overnight. As customers can safely return home, the company expects outage numbers to continue to increase. Duke Energy Florida is conducting damage assessment as weather and road conditions allow and will soon begin what is anticipated to be a lengthy restoration process.
