British Gas owner Centrica has forecast full-year earnings at the top end of analysts’ expectations, adding to a bullish mood in the energy industry that has prompted calls for higher taxes to offset rising costs for consumers. Centrica is Britain’s biggest energy retailer to households, but it also has a sizeable North Sea oil and gas production arm and owns a 20 per cent stake in the UK’s existing nuclear power plants. In an unscheduled update on Tuesday, the UK group said both its upstream oil and gas and nuclear businesses had delivered a “strong” performance in the first four months of the year.
