UPDATE 1-Brazil airline Gol swings to net loss in first quarter
Brazilian airline Gol reported on Tuesday a first-quarter recurring net loss of 130.2 million reais ($25.39 million), swinging into the red after a 136.4 million-real net profit a year ago, mainly hit by financial expenses. Gol filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States in January as it struggles with a heavy debt load after a fall in traffic due to the pandemic and delays in Boeing deliveries. The carrier last month lost its position as Brazil's No.2 airline by market share to rival Azul, as its traffic as measured by revenue passenger kilometer (RPK) dropped 4.1% in the first quarter from a year earlier.

UPDATE 1-China's COMAC is designing a new widebody jet, SCMP reports
China's state-owned planemaker COMAC has preliminary drafts for a new widebody jet called the C939, the South China Morning Post reported, likely a larger version of COMAC's first twin-aisle C929 which is itself still under design. China, through the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), is investing heavily in designing and manufacturing homegrown aircraft in an attempt to break into a passenger jet market dominated by Western planemakers Boeing and Airbus . COMAC has sketched out preliminary designs for the new C939 aircraft but it will be many years before a testable prototype could emerge, according to the SCMP report published late on Monday citing a source familiar with the matter.

Union leaders and U.S. lawmakers on Monday criticized Boeing's lockout of its unionized firefighters and urged the planemaker to reach a contract deal. Earlier this month, Boeing locked out about 130 members of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local I-66 who rejected two contract offers - a move that last week drew the concern of President Joe Biden. At a rally outside Boeing headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, IAFF President Edward Kelly, AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler and Representative Val Hoyle urged Boeing to make a deal.
