    American Express earnings, Fedspeak: What to Watch

    July 19th will feature another round of Fed commentary. On Friday, investors will hear from both New York Fed President John Williams and Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic. Wall Street will also get morning earnings reports with financial companies American Express (AXP), Huntington Bancshares (HBAN), and Comerica (CMA) reporting their results. For reads on other parts of the economy, investors will digest reports from Schlumberger (SLB), Halliburton (HAL), and AutoNation (AN). Finally, the movie "The Twisters," the sequel to "Twister," is hoping to exceed its $155 million budget at the box office.     Cardmember spending drives American Express second quarter profits soaring 39%

    American Express said second quarter profits jumped 39% as the credit card company benefitted again from a broad increase in cardmember spending as well as more of its customers carrying a balance. On a per-share basis, AmEx earned a profit of $4.15 a share. Excluding one-time gains, AmEx earned $3.49 a share, handedly beating analyst’s forecasts of $3.24 a share, according to FactSet.
