SYDNEY—An upstart milk company’s success in marketing a controversial type of milk that is supposed to be easy to digest has some big dairy companies setting aside their skepticism to introduce their own versions. New Zealand-based Fonterra Co-operative Group Ltd.—the world’s biggest dairy exporter, which sells Anchor butter and Mainland cheese in the U.S.—said in February it would start producing A2 milk, which contains only the A2 beta-casein protein, after years of dismissing it as a gimmick. Both are following the success of a2 Milk Co., a New Zealand-based company that has found fans in its home country, as well as Australia and China, and has recently entered the U.S. market.

A2 says South Korea is an attractive market because it has high per capita dairy consumption, world-class retailers and fast-growing online sales. Infant formula and milk supplier A2 Milk says sales growth in the huge China market has been unaffected by the launch of a rival brand and that the company still holds a strong position. Shares in A2 Milk fell more than 12 per cent last week after global giant Nestle launched an infant formula product that contains only the A2 instead of the A1 protein and A2 protein that are contained in conventional milk. A2 Milk's brand is built on its products containing only the A2 protein, which is said to aid digestion.
Word of Nestle SA’s arrival in a corner of China’s infant formula market sent a2 Milk Co.’s stock price tumbling 10 percent last week, enough for its second largest shareholder to jump back in.
