AvalonBay Communities, Inc. is a Maryland corporation that has elected to be treated as a real estate investment trust ("REIT") for federal income tax purposes under the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended (the "Code"). The Company develops, redevelops, acquires, owns and operates multifamily communities in New England, the New York/New Jersey metro area, the Mid-Atlantic, the Pacific Northwest, and Northern and Southern California, as well as in the Company's expansion regions of Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte, North Carolina, Southeast Florida, Dallas and Austin, Texas, and Denver, Colorado. At March 31, 2024, the Company owned or held a direct or indirect ownership interest in 299 operating apartment communities containing 90,673 apartment homes in 12 states and the District of Columbia, of which 17 communities were under development. The Company also owned or held a direct or indirect ownership interest in land or rights to land on which the Company expects to develop an additional 32 communities that, if developed as expected, will contain an estimated 11,167 apartment homes.
