Lufthansa seeks to persuade EU regulators over ITA stake buy

Lufthansa executives and lawyers will attend a day-long hearing in Brussels on Friday to try to convince EU antitrust regulators to clear the company's bid for a minority stake in Italian rival ITA Airways. Lufthansa last week submitted remedies to address the EU competition watchdog's concerns about its 325-million-euro ($346 million) bid for a 41% stake in state-owned ITA, the successor to Alitalia. So far, the remedies are little changed from an earlier package the Commission rejected as insufficient, although Lufthansa can add remedies following the hearing, people familiar with the matter have told Reuters.

UPDATE 3-Airlines reroute flights after Israeli attack on Iran

Airlines changed flight paths over Iran, cancelled some flights, diverted others to alternate airports or returned planes to their departure points on Friday due to airspace and airport closures and security concerns after an Israeli attack on Iran. Iran closed its airports in Tehran, Shiraz and Isfahan after the attack and cleared flights from the western portion of its airspace for a few hours after the attack, according to flight tracking website FlightRadar24.

Lufthansa's new ITA remedies not too different from earlier, sources say

Lufthansa's new remedies on its ITA Airways stake buy are not markedly different from an earlier package rejected by EU antitrust regulators which have also discounted Ryanair as a rival in its scrutiny of the deal, people familiar with the matter said. The airline sector has seen a slew of acquisitions in recent months, with the Lufthansa deal and British Airways owner IAG's bid to buy out Spain's Air Europa the most high-profile ones. Lufthansa submitted its latest remedies to the European Commission last Thursday, three months after its first offer was dismissed as insufficient.
