Yellow (NASDAQ:YELL) Shareholders Have Enjoyed An Impressive 169% Share Price Gain

The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. On the other hand, if you find a high quality business to buy (at the right price) you can more than double your money! For example, the Yellow Corporation (NASDAQ:YELL) share price has soared 169% in the last year. Most would be very happy with that, especially in just one year! Also pleasing for shareholders was the 20% gain in the last three months. But this could be related to the strong market, which is up 10% in the last three months. In contrast, the longer term returns are negative, since the share price is 36% lower than it was three years ago.

Because Yellow made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Yellow actually shrunk its revenue over the last year, with a reduction of 7.3%. So we would not have expected the share price to rise 169%. It just goes to show the market doesn't always pay attention to the reported numbers. Of course, it could be that the market expected this revenue drop.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Yellow shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 169% over one year. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 4% per year over five years. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - Yellow has 3 warning signs (and 1 which is significant) we think you should know about.
