Good morning.

Here’s everything you need to know in finance this morning.

Election on 18 May: Prime Minister Scott Morrison has met with the Governor General and has now called the election for 18 May – just five weeks away. Here are the eight things that could decide whether Morrison stays in the Lodge, or Bill Shorten moves in.

Brexit: The European Union is set to grant Britain a long Brexit extension at an emergency summit, granting UK Prime Minister Theresa May more time to try to push a withdrawal agreement through UK parliament.

Stocks: The ASX is expected to open lower this morning, despite a strong performance on Wall Street overnight. The Dow Jones was up 0.03 per cent, with the S&P 500 up 0.35 per cent.

Property: Is property a safer investment than cash? More than two in 10 Australians think so, but that’s not actually the case. We break it down.

Work: More than 1,000 Beaurepaires employees have been underpaid since 2010 to the tune of $1.8 million, with the firm making the discovery a review of its payroll system, the Sydney Morning Herald has reported.

And a woman in Western Australia has been handed a four-year jail sentence after stealing $500,000 from her employer.

Corporate crime: Criminals in business suits could face harsher penalties following a review by the Australian Law Reform Commission. The review is due next year and will consider changing the criminal code to provide a “stronger and more cohesive regime for corporate criminal responsibility”, Attorney-General Christian Porter said on Wednesday.
