Good morning.

Here’s what you need to know today in Australia and beyond to kick off your day:

ASX: The Australian share market is expected to open lower after a negative lead from Wall Street overnight.

The SPI200 futures contract was down 16 points, or 0.24 per cent, at 6,661.0 at 0700 AEST, suggesting an early fall for the benchmark S&P/ASX200 on Tuesday.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished down 0.52 per cent, the S&P 500 was down 0.31 per cent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite was down 0.28 per cent.

AUD: The Aussie dollar is buying 68.65 US cents from 68.73 US cents on Monday.

Balanced budget to be unveiled: The Treasurer will unveil the final budget outcome for 2018-19 this week, and will later this morning deliver a speech arguing a budget surplus is needed to pay down debt and insulate the economy against global shocks.

The Banking Royal Commission has been and gone. And were big bonuses taken away from executives? Nope. Out of all eligible ASX100 CEOs, only one – Domino’s Don Meij – did not receive a bonus for the 2018-19 financial year, well below the six CEOs who did not receive a bonus in the year before.

This is against a backdrop of a Royal Commission into the banking and financial services sector which laid bare systemic leadership failures, ACSI CEO Louise Davidson said today.

“The way bonuses are being handed out suggests there is a culture of entitlement whereby supposedly ‘at risk’ pay is not very risky at all.”

Save money on power bills: Many Aussie households have already saved up to $430 a year thanks to reforms in the energy sector which kicked in on 1 July. But there’s a way you can save even more on your electricity bills.

And: NSW could have a new premier. Last night, three rogue Liberal MPs brought a spill motion to Gladys Berejiklian over the way she handled the bill to decriminalise abortion. But senior Liberal ministers have since come out in support of her, and now the three MPs have withdrawn their spill motion.

A dating app to help with... your career? Bumble took the dating world by storm when it introduced a new concept: putting the onus to initiate a conversation on the woman.

Last year, Bumble took its innovative dating feature to the corporate world with Bumble Bizz, which is a feature of the app designed to help people find professional mentors and network with them.

US-China resume trade talks – again. Deputy trade negotiators for the United States and China will meet in Washington beginning on Thursday, a spokesman for the US Trade Representative's office says.

The US and Chinese governments have said that they expect deputy-level trade talks to resume during mid-September in Washington, but have not made public a specific date.
