World’s wealthiest people got $2.2 trillion richer in 2023

Elon Musk leads the world’s richest people, adding $140.5 billion to his net worth last year.

The world’s 500 wealthiest people are entering 2024 even richer, after adding a staggering $2.2 trillion (US$1.5 trillion) to their fortunes during 2023.

The added riches were largely due to the stellar performance of tech stocks during the year, the Bloomberg Billionaires Index found.

This helped tech billionaires gain an eye-watering $966 billion (US$658 billion), or a 48 per cent increase in their wealth.

Elon Musk topped the list as the world’s richest person, reclaiming the title from French luxury tycoon Bernard Arnault. Musk added US$95.4 billion to his wealth in 2023.

He ended the year more than US$50 billion above the LVMH CEO and Jeff Bezos, who rounded out the top three.

The new year also began with a new richest woman in the world. Heiress to the L’Oreal cosmetics throne Francoise Bettencourt Meyers became the first woman in history to amass a US$100 billion fortune. Her fortune entered the year up 40 per cent, after L’Oreal’s shares increased to a record high in 2023.

Some notable Aussies also made the list, including mining magnates Andrew Forrest and Gina Rinehart, along with Atlassian founders Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar.

The $2.2 trillion gain represented a rebound from the $2.1 trillion lost in 2022, which Bloomberg attributed to a combination of self-inflicted losses, widespread inflation and aggressive interest rate hikes.
