Woman stunned by family’s reaction to her ‘helpful’ cleaning habits: ‘You did nothing wrong’

A woman is in a feud with her girlfriend’s future sister-in-law (FSIL) over household chores.

She shared how the dilemma began on Reddit’s “Am I the A******” forum. The Reddit poster’s girlfriend has a chronically ill mother. The Reddit poster cleaned the mother’s home for a couple of weeks when the hired cleaner couldn’t make it. The good deed caused the Reddit poster’s girlfriend’s future sister-in-law to become angry.

“My girlfriend and I have been together for three years. Her mom is chronically ill and, due to her illness, is unable to manage a few of the daily physical tasks such as cleaning,” the Reddit poster explained. “The cleaner that usually comes to her house was unavailable for the past two weeks, and instead of finding a replacement, I offered to clean her house. Her mom is very happy. My girlfriend is very grateful. I got a call from my girlfriend’s FSIL accusing me of ‘upstaging’ her in gaining favor with her mom. Her FSIL is marrying her brother pretty soon. It’s pretty well known that my girlfriend’s mum doesn’t like FSIL.”

The Reddit poster’s girlfriend’s brother then got involved in the situation.

“I got a call from my girlfriend’s brother, pleading with me to apologize to her, and [saying] that instead of laughing at [FSIL], I could have offered to put in a good word for her to my girlfriend’s mom, or just been more ‘gentle and nice.’ It’s been a couple of days since that phone call, and I feel a little guilty as he keeps calling me, begging me to apologize to her,” the Reddit poster said.

Reddit users thought FSIL was way out of line here.

“Why do YOU need to apologize? You’re just being helpful,” one person asked.

“You did NOTHING WRONG,” another added.

“Why would you apologize for doing something nice?” a user said.
