First-half double seals Brentford win against Wolves, despite Shandon Baptiste red card
Ivan Toney gives visitors the lead from the penalty spot before setting up Bryan Mbeumo for the second.
Shandon Baptiste sees red for two bookings in the second half.
Brentford hold on to secure first away win of the season.
Brentford bullied Wolverhampton Wanderers into submission in the first half but in the second, home coach Bruno Lage accused the opposition of falling down too easily.
Striker Ivan Toney typifies Brentford’s determined approach and he scored a penalty and set up their second for Bryan Mbeumo as the Londoners won for the first time in the top flight in 74 years.
Toney and Mbeumo both also had first-half efforts disallowed as the Midlanders defended shambolically.
Brentford played the last 25 minutes with 10 men after midfielder Shandon Baptiste was dismissed for two bookable offences, yet Wolves failed to produce a single on-target effort.
The closest Wolves – who ended the game with six attackers – came to scoring was Adama Traore’s shot against the bar in the first half.
“I saw too many players on the floor from the opponent – and the goalkeeper changed his gloves!” said Lage.
“For the way their players played the last 45 minutes, there is a different way to manage the game.
“It was too much – if you do it one, two or three times that’s OK but sometimes it was too many players.”
Lage’s view was dismissed by Brentford head coach Thomas Frank.
“I can ask him back ‘what would he have done if he was leading a newly-promoted team – a bus stop in Hounslow – with a budget 10 times less, when you’re leading 2-0 and you’re 10 against 11, I think his players would have timewasted,” said Frank.
“I think I would be asking how the first half went (for his team).
“As for the goalkeeper, he had a big hole in his glove and I shall take a picture and put it on the website.”
Brentford had the ball in the net in the ninth minute when Toney sidefooted in Mbeumo’s low cross but the latter was offside.
Brentford took the lead in the 27th minute with Toney’s penalty.
There could be no complaints either as Fernando Marcal wrestled Toney to the ground from Sergi Canos’s corner.
Toney calmly stroked the ball to Jose Sa’s left for his second goal of the season.
Two minutes later Brentford had a second effort disallowed, for a handball against Toney when he flicked the ball up and backheeled it in after Sa had denied Vitaly Janelt and Mbeumo flicked on the loose ball.
Traore rattled the bar with a fierce drive which took a deflection off Pontus Jansson as Wolves tried to hit back.
Lage later claimed Francisco Trincao, at the time of Traore’s shot, was being similarly manhandled to the penalty incident.
Wolves’ decidedly shaky defending continued as Brentford doubled their lead in the 34th minute.
Max Kilman committed himself too easily against Toney and the striker breezed past him before crossing low to Mbeumo, who lost his marker Romain Saiss to tap home.
Brentford were reduced to 10 men in the 65th minute when Baptiste was sent off for a second bookable offence, for flattening Trincao – just six minutes after his first yellow card.
All Wolves further mustered was a header from Raul Jimenez that dropped fractionally wide from Traore’s cross on 87.

10:01 AM Hwang-Hee Chan set challenge by manager Bruno Lage
Hwang-Hee Chan set challenge by manager Bruno Lage
Wolves boss Bruno Lage refused to put the pressure on Hwang-Hee Chan and insisted the striker must dream of his goalscoring rivals.
The South Korea star scored a debut goal to help beat Watford 2-0 last weekend and secure Wolves' first Premier League win of the season.
Lage was reluctant to compare Hwang to his South Korea international team-mate Son Heung-min, who has scored 109 goals for Tottenham, and wants him to always think about his rivals for a starting spot.
"Son has already proved at Tottenham what a big player he is. Hwang did very well in Austria and he didn't have many chances in Germany and, now, he has started very well with us," he said ahead of Saturday's visit of Brentford.
"He has only played 30 minutes so in the same way I don't want to put pressure on anyone.
"I want to train the way we want to play, with a high tempo, and he is one more player to help us.
"I'm very happy to have four players to play there (up front). That's the point, to have top players. In that position, when they go to sleep, they dream about what the other guys are doing in training and the games."
Hwang - on loan from RB Leipzig with Wolves holding a £13million option to buy - is pushing to start but Jonny (knee) and Pedro Neto (knee) remain out for Lage with Neto not expected back until the new year.
Wolves lost their opening three games 1-0 despite having 57 attempts on goal but Lage insisted the mood around Molineux remains the same regardless of the results.
He said: "I don't see too much difference. The confidence comes in two ways. One is the result and the other is the way we work, the way we are playing and chances we are creating.
"When we win everything is not good and when we lose everything is not wrong. It should be the balance between the two.
"Since the first day I have seen everyone trying to work hard to improve. That's why the environment has been nice in these three months."
