Yahoo Finance Will Muschamp surfaces as analyst at Georgia after South Carolina firing
Will Muschamp is officially back in the SEC.
Muschamp, fired as the head coach at South Carolina back in November, has officially joined Kirby Smart’s staff at Georgia as a defensive analyst. Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Smart described the position as an “off-the-field role.”
“He’s already made a lot of strides in terms of helping me, helping our staff. He’ll be able to help coach the coaches. He’ll be working with the defensive side of the ball,” Smart said.
The university listed Muschamp’s title as a “quality control” coach with a salary of $300,000. That’s one of the lowest-paying gigs on the UGA staff, but finances aren’t much of an issue for Muschamp. It was revealed last month that Muschamp was paid $12.9 million as part of a buyout settlement with South Carolina.
Muschamp and Smart were teammates at Georgia back in the ’90s. They also coached together as assistants at Valdosta State and LSU.
After stops as the defensive coordinator at Auburn and Texas, Muschamp landed his first head-coaching job at Florida in 2011. That lasted four seasons. The Gators went 11-2 in Muschamp’s second season but were a combined 17-19 in the other three.
From there, Muschamp spent one season back at Auburn coaching the defense before getting another shot to be a head coach, this time at South Carolina. In Columbia, Muschamp made it to his fifth season but didn’t finish it. He was fired after a 2-5 start in 2020, giving him a 28-30 overall mark with the Gamecocks.
Now, Muschamp will get a shot to reboot his coaching career in Athens, where his son is a walk-on quarterback for the Bulldogs. Jackson Muschamp was in his first year with the program in 2020.
“It’s very valuable to have a guy that’s been a head coach at two places in our conference. He knows the ins and outs of this conference. He’ll be able to help our staff in a lot of ways. I’m excited to be able to have him join us,” Smart said.
Georgia went 8-2 in 2020, finishing in second place in the SEC East behind Florida. The Bulldogs closed out the season by beating previously undefeated Cincinnati 24-21 in the Peach Bowl.
