Where are Australia’s cheapest groceries?

Where you live affects how much you pay for your rent, transport and even the cost your supermarket groceries.

Australians which live in the eastern states generally save the most money on their weekly shop, while those living in the Northern Territory and Western Australia are paying a premium, according to a survey by consumer advocacy group Choice.

While the Northern Territory was found to have the most expensive groceries at an estimated basket costing $180.41, Australia’s cheapest grocery basket is available for $174.04 in ACT.

Geographical price differences in Australia can be due to a number of different factors, such as increased delivery costs to regional stores and differences in the size and demand for certain products, or even the type of local competition.

But the landscape of differing grocery prices across the states might not last for long, as German giant Aldi prepares to expand into South Australia and Western Australia in the next few years, adding fierce competition.
