JD Wetherspoon is to reopen 139 more pubs from lockdown next week, which will result in more than half of its estate being able to welcome customers again.

Wetherspoons, chaired by Tim Martin, opened 394 sites on April 12 when the hospitality sector was given the green light to serve outdoors in England.

The FTSE 250 company today said it will open a further 44 venues in England on April 26, in areas including London, Reading, Nottingham and more.

The pubs that reopen in the capital then, are:

Moon under Water, Leicester Square

Rockingham Arms, Elephant and Castle

Goodmans Field, Aldgate

The Plough, Hammersmith

On the same day it will also open 60 of its pubs in Scotland and 32 in Wales. Three venues will open on April 30 in Northern Ireland.

In total 533 of the company’s 871 pubs will be open.

The firm added there will be a slightly reduced menu, to include breakfast, burgers, pizza, deli deals, fish and chips and British classics.

Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson said: “We look forward to welcoming our customers and staff back to our pubs.”

Martin has been a critic of the Covid-19 lockdown strategy that has hammered the hospitality sector. He last month said the group is “committed to our long-term investment and job creation programme over the next decade”. But he added: “The investment is conditional on the UK opening back up again on a long-term basis, with no further lockdowns or the constant changing of rules.”

Pubs in England are set to be allowed to start trading indoors from May 17.
