Digital marketer reveals 'invasive' details advertisers know about your personal life: 'That's scary'

Have you ever wondered how Google decides which advertisements to serve you while you’re scrolling through search results? As it turns out, there’s a website you can visit to find out exactly how the search engine curates your specific ad experience.

On Jan. 23, TikToker Trish Kabob, a digital marketer by trade, shared this information in a now-viral video.

“I don’t think anybody realizes just how invasive Google is,” she explained. “And if you’ve ever thought, ‘Huh, this is a weird ad for me to be seeing,’ there’s actually a website that you can go to to see all of the assumptions Google has made about you based on your previous searches.”

That website is adssettings.google.com. According to Kabob, as long as you’re logged in to your Google account, you should be able to see “every assumption Google has ever made about you and why you see the ads that you see,” including your estimated age range, gender identity and relationship status.

Naturally, people were disturbed to learn about how much information Google was collecting on them.

“Google literally suggested the website I was typing in from the video I was watching not even 30 seconds before,” one person said.

“Why does it know I’m adopted,” another added.

Other people found some of Google’s inaccurate assumptions rather humorous.

“Not Google thinking I’m in a relationship when I’ve been single all 26 years of my life,” one person joked.

“So apparently I’m married,” another added. “I would love to meet my husband!”
