Virgin Australia has announced a one-way fare sale with prices as low as $49 in a bid to steal some of the thunder from Jetstar's 18th birthday promotion.

Jetstar yesterday released 4000,000 return-for-free fares as part of its celebrations, prompting rival Virgin Australia to launch a flash sale of its own.

"Virgin Australia proves to be the star of the party, today dropping thousands of fares in the airline's 'We're Coming to the Party' sale from as low as $49," the airline said in a cheeky statement.

The Virgin Australia sale, which includes a slew of domestic fares as well as flights to New Zealand and Bali, is on now until midnight on Thursday, May 5, 2022, or until sold out.

Velocity Frequent Flyer loyalty members will also receive up to double Status Credits for travel until June 30, 2022, as part of an extended loyalty promotion, which also applies to the sale.
