Some beauty trends are meant to stay in the past—like “the skinny brow” and low-rise jeans—but the ombre lip is due for a comeback. The ‘90s lipstick hack uses lip liner and lip pigment to give the illusion of fuller lips. On this episode of Make Me Up, host Melanie Sutrathada (@melaniesutra) revives the ombre lip makeup trend and shares how to achieve it using two great products.

First, Melanie lines her lips using the Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Liner in “Cranberry.” Melanie gushes that the shade is “so beautiful and flattering on just about every skin tone.” Plus it’s powerfully pigmented and long-lasting, to boot.

Starting with the corners of her lips, Melanie creates a side triangle line and then rubs her lips together to fully blend the liner into the corners of her mouth. The host notes that you could fill in your entire lip with the liner “for a lip that has some true staying power,” but she sticks to the perimeter. Next, she lines the rest of the perimeter and “smushes” them together to blend it into her lips.

Melanie then uses the NARS Powermatte Lip Pigment in “Bad Guy” to fill in her lips. The lip pigment is saturated enough to be worn on its own, but it also looks great when layered with an ombre lip.

Melanie glides the lip pigment onto the centers of her top and bottom lips and then uses a lip brush to “feather out” where the lip liner and lip pigment meet, so that they blend together seamlessly. Finally, Melanie lines her lips one last time to get a really defined look.

“Sometimes I like to go in with a little concealer and a contour brush and make those lines super fierce,” shares Melanie. “That is a whole vibe of its own.”
