Viral Kardashian birthday cake is rumored to cost $7,000, and TikTok is perplexed

The Kardashian family’s favorite celebratory cake is going viral on TikTok — and stirring rumors about its price tag.

For over 30 years, Hansen’s Cakes in Los Angeles has been making cakes for the Kardashian-Jenner family — specifically their flower-topped basket weave cake.

Recently, the cake gained viral fame when it was featured by TikToker @quinnhouses, whose birthday cake video quickly gained over 2.7 million views. However, it was her onscreen text that truly caused an online stir: “pov: ur cutting ur $7000 kardashian birthday cake from hansens.”

It’s not the first time the Kardashian-Jenner clan has gone viral for their spending habits — as in the case of Kylie Jenner’s shockingly expensive “luxury” teddy bears — but in the case of this now famous cake, it seems the family might not be the big spenders that social media claims.

When @quinnhouses posted her now viral birthday cake footage, comments came pouring in — most of which expressed shock at the alleged cost.

“Was it actually 7000??? omg,” one user wrote.

“The icing work is beautiful but that’s SO much money,” another user commented.

“$7,000? did that cake come with a used car too? 😂” joked another user.

The cake, beloved by TikTok for its coquette aesthetic, is a favorite of the Kardashian-Jenner family, according to the TikTok account for Hansen’s Cakes (@hansencakes).

Hansen’s Cakes has been making cakes and pastries for seven generations.

But when Keeping Up With the Kardashians filmed there in 2011, documenting Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian shopping for their wedding cake, the bakery gained global fame.

In fact, the bakery — founded in Denmark, then later brought to the United States in the late 1900s, according to the bakery’s website — has been featured on many episodes of KUWTK over the years.

While many of the Kardashian-Jenner family’s cakes from Hansen’s likely cost a pretty penny — as in the case of North West’s giant Minnie Mouse cake, or Mason Disick’s toy train cake — the famous bakery cleared up rumors about the cost of their smaller basket weave cakes in the comments of their video.

“Are they really 8,000? Someone on tik tok was saying that they spent 1,000’s on their cakes,” one user asked.

To this, Hansen’s Cakes replied, “I promise you the pricing is much lower. People like to spread outrageous rumors.”

“Is it true it’s 7k,” another user asked. The bakery replied simply, “No 🙃.”

“I heard $7,000.00,” commented another user. “Those rumors are false,” the bakery responded.

“7000?” another user inquired.

This time, Hansen’s Cakes specified the price: “Absolutely not. $95.”

So, where did the $7,000 price tag rumor come from? According to outlets reporting on Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s wedding in 2014, it seems the couple spent $7,000 on a 7-foot-tall vanilla and berry wedding cake. How that amount became attached to the comparatively modestly priced basket weave cake is a mystery.

While there’s no doubt the Kardashian-Jenner clan spends lavishly in other ways, at least now the internet can rest easy knowing that the famous cake doesn’t cost as much as a used car.
