‘Vicious’: Melbourne café’s $1 ‘Dan Andrews surcharge’

A Melbourne café has asked customers to pay a $1 surcharge on all purchases if they support Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews.

According to 7News, the owner of Arcobar in Melbourne’s Moorabbin put up a sign saying, “Do you support Dan? Add $1 to your order”.

The sign stated that the “RED” surcharge would be added to “every order for those people who think Dan is doing a great job”.

It continued: “These additional funds are much appreciated. Thank you.”

Owner Franz Madlener said the sign was not politically motivated, but rather an incentive for customers to stop “lecturing” staff about how lucky they are to be able to open their doors while other businesses are shut.

“They ask us, ‘aren’t you grateful?’ and the answer is no,” Madlener said. “It doesn’t lead to banter, it’s vicious.”

The café is reportedly not actively enforcing the surcharge, but any money that was added to orders was divided among staff.

Dan Andrews faces mounting pressure to open

The state is set to begin a staged reopening from 1 November, but the Premier is facing mounting pressure to open doors earlier.

In an open letter to Daniel Andrews, the chiefs and directors of some of Australia’s biggest organisations asked the Premier to open businesses now, and not wait.

“The current situation is not sustainable,” the CEOs wrote.

“Victorians are hurting badly, personally and economically. Medical experts have warned of the devastating effects the restrictions are having on health and mental wellbeing.”

The Council of Small Business Organisations Australia (COSBOA) also penned its own open letter to Andrews, calling for a meeting with the Premier to discuss a plan to reopen businesses sooner rather than later.
