Valentine, date night, kisses: Aussies’ loved-up banking descriptions

Valentine’s Day is tomorrow and Aussies aren’t just using flowers and chocolate to show their loved one how much they care.

New NAB insights reveal Aussies are getting romantic when it comes to their banking payment descriptions, with phrases like ‘XOXO’, ‘date night’ and ‘kisses’ among the top terms of endearment used when sending money around V-Day.

‘Valentine’ was the most popular phrase, according to NAB’s analysis of 140 million transactions over the past four years, followed by ‘wife’ and ‘Valentine’s Day’.

NAB executive Kylie Young said it was nice to see Aussies using digital banking to show their love.

“Hugh Grant was right when he said in the opening scenes of Love Actually that love really is all around. Our analysis shows it even extends to when we’re sending and receiving money every day,” Young said.

“PayID even allows people to add in a description just using emojis. So, if you can’t say it with words, three heart emojis is always a good option.”

Aussies were also keen to join their banking with their loved one, with more than 100,000 new joint accounts opened in 2022.

Aussies spending for love

Aussies are expected to spend a whopping $485 million this Valentine’s Day, up 16.9 per cent from last year.

Loved-up Aussies will fork out $118 each on average, according to the research from Australian Retailers Association and Roy Morgan, with younger Aussies expected to spend the most.

Most Aussies are going down the classic route, with flowers the top gift (42 per cent), followed by chocolates and food (29 per cent).

Despite cost-of-living pressures, 89 per cent of Aussies said they would spend either more (25 per cent) or the same (64 per cent) as last year.
