Yahoo Finance USWNT's Alex Morgan leaving Tottenham Hotspur to return to the U.S.
Morgan, the 31-year-old United States women’s national team headliner who in September joined FA Women’s Super League team Tottenham Hotspur on loan from Orlando Pride of the NWSL, confirmed Monday that she’s leaving England after making five appearances in a little more than three months with Spurs.
Morgan will rejoin Orlando ahead of the 2021 NWSL season.
“I will be forever grateful to the club, my teammates and Spurs supporters for taking such good care of me and my family,” said Morgan, who landed in Tottenham just four months after giving first to her first child, daughter Charlie, with her pro soccer-playing husband Servando Carrasco. “From the moment I arrived in London, I realized I was part of a first-class organization, one that helped provide me the opportunity to immerse myself back into the game I love.”
Morgan was one of several of USWNT stars who hopped the Atlantic to ink deals with English clubs last summer. Sam Mewis — named last week as U.S. Soccer’s female athlete of the year — and Rose Lavelle signed with Manchester City, while Tobin Heath and Christen Press moved to Manchester United.
But Morgan’s debut with Spurs was delayed until November as she regained fitness following her maternity leave. She played in five games across all competitions, including last month FA Cup loss to North London rival Arsenal. Both of Morgan’s two goals came in league play; she scored her first on Dec. 6 against Brighton and Hove Albion, and added her second against Aston Villa last week. Both strikes came from the penalty spot.
“We can confirm that Alex Morgan will be returning to the United States in the New Year after the conclusion of the first half of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League season,” Tottenham said in a statement.
Morgan has amassed 170 caps at the international level and helped lead the U.S. to the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics and to the the last two FIFA World Cup titles, including last year’s triumph in France, where she finished tied atop the scoring charts with teammate Megan Rapinoe. She returned to the USWNT last month for the first time since the Americans’ 2019 World Cup final win over the Netherlands.
