Phil Mickelson misses cut at U.S. Open after awful opening rounds: ‘I’m so sick of this’

The U.S. Open didn’t go according to plan for Phil Mickelson this week.

Perhaps no moment summed it up better than his approach shot on the ninth fairway on Thursday — which sailed wide left back onto the first tee box.

“I’m so sick of this,” he said.

Mickelson, after an opening-round 79, posted a 74 on Friday to drop him to 13-over par for the week — well outside the cut line at Winged Foot Golf Club in New York.

His combined 153 marked his second-worst opening-rounds score at a major championship in his career, and only two players had a worse opening-rounds score.

Mickelson struggles again, misses cut

Mickelson got off to a great start on Thursday, and made birdie on his first two holes.

Though it was early, the five-time major championship winner seemed well on his way to a successful week.

Yet those hopes vanished almost instantly.

Mickelson made three straight bogeys after his birdie-birdie start, and then erupted on the back side with five more and a double en-route to his 9-over finish. He hit just two fairways on the day and three-putted twice in his final four holes.

“I drove it poorly, and I putted poorly,” he said plainly, via the Associated Press.

That left much to be desired on Friday.

“I’m 9 over,” Mickelson said Thursday, via the Associated Press. “I’ll play as hard as I can and enjoy the round [on Friday].”

Mickelson’s Friday didn’t start out awful. He finished his front-side even after offsetting an early birdie with a bogey on his third hole. The back, however, was where he fell apart. Mickelson carded four bogeys in his final seven holes, ruining any shot he had of making it to the weekend.

The worst part about it, he said after the round on Friday, was that he was content with his game heading into New York. The 50-year-old finished T2 at the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational last month and won his debut handily on the PGA Tour Champions.

“I’m a little disappointed because I’d prepared and worked hard and felt ready, and I got out here, after playing some really good golf the last few months at home, I get out here and I play some of my worst,” Mickelson said Friday, via The Golf Channel.

Mickelson — who has 44 wins in his decades-long career on the PGA Tour — is still looking to round out the career Grand Slam with a win at the U.S. Open. He’s undoubtedly running out of time to pull off the feat.

Yet after a rough two days in New York, Mickelson will have to pack it up and try again next year in Southern California instead.
