This year’s US Open is in full swing (no pun intended), with professional golfers flooding California’s sunny Pebble Beach golf course to take their shot.

The tournament, which started yesterday and will run through until Sunday, will see the likes of Tiger Woods, Justin Rose and Rickie Fowler play for the ultimate prize.

What’s the ultimate prize?

Golfers are taking their aim to hit a whopping US$12.5 million (AU$18.1 million) prize. That’s a jump of US$500,000 from the previous tournament, and is the largest prize pool of any of the major golf tournaments, according to Sporting News.

If you’re wondering what the prize pool is for the women’s tournament, it’s a huge US$12 million less than the men’s.

But, while it stands at US$5 million, it was given a US$500,000 raise on last year’s tournament too.

How much do the individual players earn?

At this year’s Women’s Open in May, the winner, Jeongeun Lee, received a US$1 million payout, which was the largest single-tournament payout in women’s golf on record, according to Forbes.

Last year, the men’s winner, Brooks Koepka, took home a whopping US$2.16 million, and second place, Tommy Fleetwood, took home US$1.29 million.

This year’s Masters Tournament saw Tiger Woods take home a whopping US$2.07 million.

Speaking of Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods has earned a staggering US$1.5 billion throughout his career, and it’s estimated he earns around US$115 million per year, according to Money.

After signing his first professional contract with Nike at 20 for US$40 million, Forbes estimates his net worth now is currently a whopping US$800 million, and those figures are expected to grow given the massive year he’s had in sports.
