On this episode of In The Know: Upcycled, join DIY fashionista, Wandy the Maker (@wandythemaker), as he demonstrates how to turn your old bandanas into a pair of custom patchwork pants!
What you’ll need:
10 – 12 Bandanas
Step 1: Make your pants pattern
Using a pair of pants that already fit you well, trace out your pants pattern onto some pattern paper, leaving half an inch of seam allowance on the sides, and a full inch on the bottom for the hem. Once you’ve traced your leg pattern, cut it out.
Step 2: Cut your bandanas into pieces
Using a rotary cutting set, cut out your bandanas into a variety of shapes and sizes. This will create the patchwork effect of your pants!
Step 3: Arrange your bandana pieces
Once your bandana pieces are cut out, arrange them together however you like!
Step 4: Sew your bandana pieces together
When you’re set with the placement of your bandana pieces, it’s time to sew! Wandy sews his pieces together using a straight stitch.
Step 5: Cut out your bandana pattern
Lay your leg pattern on top of your bandana sheet and cut it out.
Step 6: Sew the lining
With your same pants pattern, cut out a lining using a different material and pin it to your bandana leg piece. Once the bandana leg piece is pinned to the lining, sew them together using a straight stitch. Once you’ve sewn all the way around, trim off any excess lining material using scissors.
Step 7: Repeat
Repeat steps 1-6 with your other leg panel.
Step 8: Sew your leg pieces together
Place one leg piece right side out inside the other leg panel that’s inside out—so their right sides are together. Line up the seams and pin them together. Then, sew your leg pieces together using a straight stitch, leaving a quarter inch seam allowance.
Step 9: Hem the bottoms
For the bottom hem, fold the fabric about an inch down and pin it all the way around. Then, sew your hem up. Repeat this process on the other leg.
Step 10: Create an elastic waistband
Fold the top of the pants down a bit wider than the width of your elastic. Then pin it down and sew it all the way around, leaving a 2 inch opening for the elastic. Once you’ve sewn the fold, feed the elastic through the opening and then sew the loose ends together using a zigzag stitch. Finally, sew up the hole on your waistband and you’re done!
