University students don’t need vaccines to attend lectures, says No10

University students won’t need to have had both their coronavirus jabs to attend lecturers, 10 Downing Street has confirmed.

Boris Johnson has already unveiled plans for coronavirus passports to be used to get into nightclubs from September.

But number 10 has revealed students will not require the NHS Covid pass for learning.

The government has strongly encouraged everyone in higher education to get their coronavirus vaccines.

A government spokesperson told The Standard: “Vaccinations are important in helping to keep higher education settings safe for when students return in the autumn term and we strongly encourage all students to take up the offer of both vaccine doses.

“The government currently has no plans to require the use of the NHS Covid Pass for access to learning however universities and FE colleges are encouraged to promote the offer of the vaccine and should continue to conduct risk assessments for their particular circumstances.”

Polling suggested students will take up the vaccine offer with 90% reporting to an ONS survey they would likely to be vaccinated or had already had their jabs.

Previously, the University and College Union said the use of passes for university learning would be “hugely discriminatory against those who are unable to be vaccinated” and for international students.

Discussions had been held over whether the NHS pass should be used for university lectures.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab initially said a decision would be made in September.

“We will certainly make sure university students have advance warning, of course we’re going to be mindful of this,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
