Two men were left seriously injured in separate stabbings in east London on Tuesday night.

Police inspectors covering Tower Hamlets and Hackney said they had witnessed “escalating incidents of weapons enabled violence” on Tuesday night, including the two stabbings.

A person has been arrested after a man was stabbed repeatedly in Shadwell’s James Voller Way just after 8pm.

According to police, an innocent bystander intervened in the stabbing “at great personal risk”, but was “thankfully uninjured.”

The victim suffered serious injuries but these are not thought to be life-threatening.

The arrested man was taken to hospital for an injury to his hand prior to going into custody, a Met spokesperson said.

In the second case, a man in his 20s was left seriously injured after being repeatedly stabbed in Limehouse’s Upper North Street at around 11.45pm.

Officers have yet to make any arrests in connection with that stabbing.

Inspectors put in place enhanced stop-and-search powers for the areas of E1, E2 and E14 postcodes in the wake of the incidents, which also included a report of more than ten men fighting with knives around Bethnal Green Road and St Matthew Road.

The order, which gives officers to search people in the area without reasonable grounds, was due to elapse at 7am on Wednesday.

It can only be used for a limited period of time in a set area when a senior officer believes there is a possibility of serious violence, or weapons are involved.
