Two children dead, four people injured in Wyaralong Dam crash

Two children have been killed after a single-vehicle crash in Queensland’s southeast.

The car carrying six people crashed into Wyaralong Dam off Beaudesert Boonah Road just after 2pm (AEST) on Sunday.

“The car was submerged in the water for a period of time before the six occupants, two adults and four children, were recovered by emergency services and witnesses,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

They also confirmed two children had died.

A toddler was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition while an infant was treated at the scene.

The boy who is critical is one year old and the injured infant is six months old, 9News reported.

It is believed the cause of death for the two deceased children was submersion, not from crash injuries, The Courier-Mail reported.

A male patient, aged in his 20s, was transported to Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital in a stable condition with leg injuries, a spokesperson for Queensland Ambulance told Yahoo News Australia.

A female patient in her 30s was airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital, also in a stable condition.

Queensland Police Inspector Douglas McDonald described the scene as “tragic and confronting”, according to the ABC.

Passersby helped pull the people from the car while it was submerged in the dam and Insp McDonald said their actions were “pivotal” in making sure the situation wasn’t worse.

Two doctors and an off-duty paramedic were among those who helped pull the people out of the car.

“It's absolutely tragic for the family. It was fantastic work [by the passersby] to help rescue to occupants,” he said.

Police divers and the Forensic Crash Unit were at the scene and Beaudesert Boonah Road was closed.

Queensland Police confirmed a police vehicle rolled as it was en route to the scene, though no officers were injured.

Earlier on Sunday in a separate incident, about 75km away, Queensland Police were investigating a fatal crash in Advancetown.

Police said preliminary investigations indicated a motorbike travelling south on Nerang Murwillumbah Road collided head-on with a small truck.

The 26-year-old man riding the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene.
