Twitter gets 'the ick' after seeing former Disney star chain-smoking during interview: 'Making smoking look this uncool is almost impressive'

Cole Sprouse is getting dragged online for his recent behavior during a podcast interview in which he obsessively chain-smoked indoors while venting about his life.

The Riverdale actor appeared on the popular podcast Call Her Daddy on March 7, where he chatted with host Alex Cooper about everything from his life as a Disney child star to his recent breakup with Riverdale co-star Lili Reinhart. According to most people on Twitter, there was something kind of cringe about it.

After a promo clip of the interview was released, people couldn’t stop talking about one thing: how gross all the smoking was.

“he gives me the ick,” one person tweeted.

“why is he smoking INSIDE like [eww],” another responded.

“It’s giving rich white kid pretending to be a tortured artist,” someone else added.

Some people felt the whole thing was part of an act, as though it were an attempt at further shedding his formerly squeaky-clean, child-star image. But most were just majorly turned off by it, along with his somewhat pompous demeanor.

“Him smoking indoors like he’s French or something this is so …,” one person tweeted.

“making smoking look this uncool is almost impressive,” another added.

To be fair, Sprouse did ask Cooper if he could smoke first before he lit up, and she gave him the green light. That said, people apparently took it as yet example of Sprouse’s recent “bad boy” behavior and didn’t like how he seemed to be portraying himself as a victim in a lot of his stories.

As he spoke, the actor paused multiple times to take a long drag of his cigarette, which some interpreted as overly dramatic. He then opened up about losing his virginity at 14 (an event he says happened with an older woman and only lasted 20 seconds) as well as his days on Disney’s The Suite Life of Zack & Cody with his twin brother Dylan (let’s just say their relationship got complicated).

But it wasn’t until he opened up about his split with Reinhart that things got really got juicy.

According to Sprouse, the breakup was more or less “mutual,” though he was ultimately the one who walked away.

“I left,” he told Cooper. “But honestly, when you’re in a relationship for that long, and someone leaves, it’s not … a surprise.”

The fact that the two continued to work together, however, made things messy.

“Ooh, it was really hard,” recalled Sprouse. “I know we did quite a bit of damage to each other.”

Later on, he pinned a lot of his behavior in the relationship on low self-esteem.

“I think if I had loved myself a little more, I probably would have left [the relationship] a little earlier,” Sprouse shared in between drags. “I just felt like I had to take care of a lot of people around me, which was not good for me. I probably should have exercised a bit more selfishness in that situation.”

In the end, it didn’t seem to matter what Sprouse was saying — people were more interested in how he was saying it and why he continued to hold his cigarette like some sort of prop.

“he’s holding it like betty draper from mad men,” one person tweeted.

“It looks like he’s never actually smoked, he just saw people do it in 1940s movies,” another person added.

“ngl as someone who never thought smoking looked cool or glamorous, this is what all smoking looks like to me,” someone else shared.
