Why Twitter’s CEO eats just seven meals a week

PARIS, FRANCE - MAY 15: Chief executive officer of Twitter Inc. and Square Inc. Jack Dorsey arrives to attend the "Tech for Good" Summit at Hotel de Marigny on May 15, 2019 in Paris, France. The second edition of the "Tech for Good Summit " launched by French President Emmanuel Macron in 2018 brings together more than 80 leaders of large companies, startups and players in the global digital ecosystem to discuss the contribution of technology to the common good and the collective fight against digital threats.

Chief executives are known to have some whacky habits, but Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey may just take the cake with this one.

In a recent interview with WIRED, Dorsey revealed he ate just seven meals a week - “just dinner”.

Last year, Dorsey was quoted saying he ate only one meal a day, and often skipped eating on weekends altogether in a bid to increase his productivity, but has now confirmed he eats seven solid meals a week.

Those meals consist of proteins like fish, chicken or steak, “and a lot of greens,” he told a podcast in March last year.

“And then, I have mixed berries as a dessert, maybe some dark chocolate,” he said.

How does Dorsey stave off his hunger?

“I try to meditate for two hours every day,” he told WIRED.

He also takes ice baths and heads to the sauna - and drinks a lot of water.

But Dorsey isn’t the only celebrity to take up intermittent fasting: Kourtney Kardashian and Hugh Jackman also reportedly swear by the practice.

How does intermittent fasting actually work?

While Dorsey’s one-meal-a-day routine might sound extreme, the practice of intermittent fasting has hit the mainstream for its positive effects on productivity and, naturally, weight loss.

Fasting throughout the day promotes brain health, helps you minimise distractions and eliminates the 2:00pm post-lunch slump, reports show.

“IF [intermittent fasting] makes intuitive sense,” Harvard Health research doctor, Monique Tello said.

Carbohydrates are broken down into sugar and used for energy, but if they don’t get used, they’re stored away in our fat cells. These sugars can only enter our cells with insulin, a hormone made in the pancreas, according to Tello.

“Between meals, as long as we don’t snack, our insulin levels will go down and our fat cells can then release their stored sugar, to be used as energy. We lose weight if we let our insulin levels go down. The entire idea of IF is to allow the insulin levels to go down far enough and for long enough that we burn off our fat.”
