One of the best things about getting away is staying in a comfortable hotel room and it is possible to create one for yourself at home.
According to sleep expert and founder of Wowbeds Gary Ginsberg, when it comes to getting a vacation-worthy night's sleep, it's essential to adopt the mindset of a hotel.
“A great bed offers the groundwork for a peaceful, pleasant retreat,” he said.
“Hotel beds are extremely comfortable so you can enjoy your vacations in full, starting with an incredible sleep on a dream-come-true bed.
“They spend a lot of time studying their beds and perfecting the sleep experience for guests - so we mere bed-normals should do the same.”
Here are Ginsberg’s tips on how to transform your bedroom into a luxury escape.
Ginsberg said the top-rated hotels invested in the best mattress designs that typically fell in the medium-firm category and could regulate your temperature.
Hybrid, innerspring, and memory foam mattresses are found most frequently in hotel rooms because they promote high levels of comfort and support.
Hybrid mattresses are a popular choice and don’t have to break the bank. A Queen-size Duo mattress will set you back around $795.
Ginsberg said hotels usually opted for light, breathable, and crisp sheets, such as long-staple cotton with a thread count of around 300.
As a general rule, the higher the thread count, the softer the sheets.
Make sure to wash the sheets thoroughly with a nice-smelling fabric softener. The pleasant scent of the sheets gives a serene feeling that helps you fall asleep peacefully.
In addition to cleanliness, hotels use flat sheets that are ironed, stretched, and tucked underneath the mattress.
Almost all high-end hotels dress their beds in white linens too, from an all-white doona to spotless white sheets.
It creates a calming focal point for your room, plus it doesn’t hurt that white linens are easy to bleach.
Just make sure that the rest of your room, including your headboard, isn’t too cold or stark.
Warm accents around the bedroom can also keep the space luxe and cosy.
You can pick up all-white, 500-thread-count sheets from Kmart for around $60.
The right lighting can help give you the best setting for sleep.
Many hotels use lots of lamps with warm-coloured bulbs in a lower wattage to keep the room cosy.
This kind of lighting is also great for helping the brain relax at the end of the day so you can sleep soundly through the night.
Ginsberg said the best suggestion was to use bright, cool tones during daytime hours to increase alertness, and then during the darker, evening hours, switching to dim, warmer tones of lighting may create some benefit for sleep.
You can get warm light bulbs from Bunnings for less than $6.
For a queen or king-sized bed, it's recommended to add four to five pillows.
Most hotels will include down fill pillows or feather pillows for the softness. You can then include two fibrefill pillows to go with it.
Different pillows will not just give you options on what to use, they help you choose the preferred softness to lay your head on.
If you like hugging your pillows, this should work as well. Adding some throw cushions can help you add colour to the bedroom and makes the bed fluffier.
