Trump's expensive last-minute decision before leaving office

Donald Trump has reportedly made an expensive decision for US taxpayers before leaving the White House.

Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States on Wednesday evening local time.

But before Biden was sworn in Trump told US Secret Services to provide protection for his four adult children and their two spouses, The Washington Post reported.

It’s likely to cost taxpayers millions of dollars. Normally, Trump, his wife and 14-year-old son Barron would have been the only ones entitled to protection.

Trump pardons nearly 150 people

Among other moves Trump made in his final hours of his presidency included pardoning almost 150 people.

New Orleans rapper Lil Wayne who is serving time in jail on gun charges, but also endorsed the outgoing president before the November election, was pardoned.

The White House said the pardon for Lil Wayne was endorsed by former NFL star and Trump friend Deion Sanders.

However, Trump did not pardon himself or members of his family.

He also did not pardon his lawyer Rudy Giuliani.

Will Trump return to politics?

According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump’s time in politics might not be over either.

Trump has been in talks with aides and associates about creating a new party that will be called the ‘Patriot Party’, the publication reported.

The new party could further divide the Republican Party that has become increasingly fractured since rioters stormed the Capitol building earlier this month.

On Tuesday (local time), the top Republican in Congress blamed Trump for the violent mob, claiming the group “was fed lies”.

“They were provoked by the president and other powerful people," Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader, said on the floor of the chamber.

McConnell’s remarks were his most severe and public rebuke of the outgoing president.

In his final address to the nation, Trump said his ‘movement’ was just getting started.

“Now, as I prepare to hand power over to a new administration at noon on Wednesday, I want you to know that the movement we started is only just beginning,” he said.
