Social media is obsessed with this vegan alternative to fast food chicken nuggets: ‘Once you’re hooked, it’s over’

Is it possible for a vegan chicken nugget to taste better than the real thing?

To some of the fast food truthers out there, that might sound sacrilegious.

Still, that’s the premise behind NUGGS. The brand, which stands as a delicious veggie alternative to chicken-based nuggets, calls itself the “Tesla of chicken nuggets.”

“Once you’re hooked, it’s over!” one fan wrote on Instagram.

“Now this is innovation,” another added.

In The Know’s editors had to know what all the hype was about, so we got our hands on a few boxes and put them to the test. We compared the vegan chicken nuggets to two tried-and-true favorites: McDonald’s McNuggets and some Dino Nuggets from the freezer aisle.

Do vegan chicken nuggets really live up to the hype?

We decided to test our nuggets on three, all-important factors:

  1. Price: How much do they cost?

  2. Nutrition: How many calories and grams of fat are in a 10-count?

  3. Taste (Note: this is the only one that really matters)

First up, price. The NUGGS cost $34.99 for 50 nuggets, which breaks down to $6.99 per 10. Meanwhile, Dino Nuggets cost $1.20 for every 10. A 10-pack order of McNuggets costs $4.49. So, a big win for the freezer aisle here.

Nutrition comes with a caveat. Obviously, calories and fat aren’t the end-all-be-all of health — and in fact, it shouldn’t matter! Everything, including nuggets, are good in moderation. But, based on our very arbitrary metrics, here’s the breakdown for a 10-nugget serving:

  • NUGGS: 425 calories, 3 grams saturated fat

  • Dino Nuggets: 425 calories, 4 grams saturated fat

  • McDonald’s: 410 calories, 4 grams saturated fat

Lastly, taste. We were shocked to discover that, while McNuggets are almost unbeatable, NUGGS are a close second. The vegan nuggets are crispy, savory and chewy in the exact same way a chicken nugget should be — but without any of the meat, of course.

So, if you’re a vegetarian, a nugget connoisseur or just looking for a change, NUGGS are definitely worth a try.
