Trevor Lawrence will not attend NFL draft, to watch from Clemson with family instead

Clemson star and presumptive No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence won’t be at the NFL draft in Cleveland next month.

Lawrence, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, will instead watch the draft at Clemson with family and friends.

Lawrence threw for more than 3,100 yards and 24 touchdowns in 10 games last season with the Tigers, and finished second in the Heisman Trophy race. He led them to two College Football Playoff championship game appearances, and won a national title in 2018. The 21-year-old underwent labrum surgery on his left shoulder earlier this year.

He is almost universally assumed to be the first player selected in the draft, which should land him with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The draft is scheduled to take place from April 29-May 1.

Lawrence to skip ‘large, live, in-person’ draft

After the draft was adjusted to a virtual format last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this draft in Cleveland will be a “large, live, in-person event.”

The setup is expected to have stages spread out across downtown Cleveland, including at FirstEnergy Stadium, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Great Lakes Science Center. Basic coronavirus safety measures, like social distancing and mask requirements, will be in place.

"We are thrilled to be heading to Cleveland for the NFL draft, which has become one of the most highly anticipated events in sports," said Peter O'Reilly, an NFL executive vice president of club business and league events.

"Just months after executing a safe and successful Super Bowl LV, we look forward to bringing the excitement of our draft traditions to fans in collaboration with the Browns, Destination Cleveland, Greater Cleveland Sports Commission, the City of Cleveland and all of our local Cleveland partners."
