Qantas should not be written off as it remains a very strong national carrier and is addressing problems with its international service, Tourism Australia boss Andrew McEvoy says.
At The Hotel School in Sydney on Monday, Mr McEvoy was asked if the airline was in big trouble and its future in question.
"Domestically Qantas is incredibly strong and their profit figures show that," he said.
The airline's international business was hurting, but Qantas had plans to deal with that.
Mr McEvoy said Jetstar was a "huge growth engine" for the group both domestically and internationally.
It was one of the most successful low cost carriers globally, he said.
"I personally would not be writing Qantas off," he said.
Mr McEvoy said Qantas management was worried about shareholders and making money for them "which is what they should do".
"They've got a kangaroo on their tail and they're a great ambassador for Australia."
