Yahoo Finance Tottenham’s winners and losers after Jose Mourinho sacking
Jose Mourinho has divided the squad and fanbase at Tottenham, meaning his sacking will leave quite the fallout.
But who will benefit most from Mourinho's departure and who are those that will feel it most keenly?
Winners
Gareth Bale
The Wales international was - alongside Mourinho himself - a marquee deal for Daniel Levy which has not gone to plan. Bale has endured a difficult relationship with Mourinho who has questioned his fitness and attitude all season while leaving the winger on the bench when Spurs have been in need of inspiration.
Ryan Mason, who has taken caretaker charge, will - you would imagine - do no such thing and have Bale back in his plans quickly.
Dele Alli
Perhaps the biggest casualty of Mourinho's time. Alli looked revived and resurgent in Mourinho's early weeks but has seen his form fall off a cliff before being cast aside and frozen out this season. It has cost him his place in the squad and in Gareth Southgate's plans. The midfielder will be delighted to see the back of him.
Harry Winks
Once thought of as the future of Tottenham and England's answer to their long standing midfield problems, Winks has suffered an almighty fall from grace under Mourinho.
The Spurs academy graduate is able to dictate games when on form but has tumbled down the pecking order at the expense of more robust players under Mourinho, starting just seven League games all season.
Should Levy turn to a more progressive manager as a replacement, Winks will hope to be key to their plans.
Danny Rose
The full-back clashed with Mourinho during an explosive meeting which was screened as part of the Amazon Prime series, All Or Nothing.
Rose accused the manager of treating him unfairly and picking players ahead of him despite them being "s*** in training, s*** in games".
The full-back, who is out of contract in the summer, was bombed out of first team training but has reportedly asked to return to the group and will hope for a better ending to his career at the club now.
Steven Bergwijn
The Dutch winger has been the butt of jokes having not managed to score a single goal this season but has barely been given a chance to rectify that form under Mourinho, having largely been left out of the squad in recent weeks.
The 23-year-old has seen his confidence collapse and is symptomatic of a number of players who began strongly with Spurs but have regressed dramatically under Mourinho.
Losers
Jose Mourinho
The former Special One appears to have run out of magic. Mourinho's last few jobs have all followed the same unhappy pattern of a slight up-tick before an almighty fall. It happened on fast-forward in north London.
It is hard to see another top European club taking the gamble that the Portuguese can become his old, charismatic self once more.
Daniel Levy
The statement announcing Mourinho to the world as Tottenham's new manager hailed his record of wining silverware and was a landmark moment in the club's history. They had hired a calibre of manager not thought possible before the Mauricio Pochettino era.
Levy saw the appointment as the chance to turn potential into silverware and it has failed spectacularly. "We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room,” said Levy at the time. Instead, Mourinho leaves the dressing room divided and drained.
Joao Sacramento
Mourinho poached his assistant from Ligue 1 side Lille when he arrived at Tottenham in late 2019. Sacramento was hailed as one of the brightest coaches in Europe after his work in France, and was seen as Mourinho looking to evolve with fresh ideas alongside him.
The move to England has not worked out for the 32-year-old, who will now be standing at a crossroads in his career.
Lucas Moura
The one man who may be sad to see the back of Mourinho. The sacked manager had long been a fan of the forward and often played him in his preferred attacking role.
Moura has been on strong form lately but may struggle to get as many minutes under Mason and Chris Powell.
Jorge Mendes
The super-agent won't be too hard hit by Mourinho's departure, but had developed a strong link with the club and had managed to move a number of his players to north London during Mourinho's time.
That link may now be severed.
