Known for its soaring skyscrapers, the island country of Bahrain is the best country overall for expats, according to an international survey of more than 18,000 people.

And, it’s one of the best countries for expats looking to boost their income.

Qatar tops the list for expats looking to earn more than they would for the same job back home, followed by Switzerland, Norway, Saudi Arabia and Luxembourg, the study by expat network InterNations revealed.

At the other end of the spectrum, expats in Greece, the Dominican Republic and Portugal earn less than they would in a similar job back home.

But, when it comes to the cost of living, Bulgaria tops the list. Nearly three quarters (73 per cent) of respondents said their disposable income is more than enough to cover everything they need – significantly more than the global average of 51 per cent.

Additionally, 97 per cent of expats in Bulgaria describe the cost of living as affordable.

Colombia and Vietnam topped the list in terms of personal finance for the second year in a row but swapped positions.

Most expats (84 per cent) are generally satisfied with their financial situation. The same goes for Vietnam, where 93 per cent think their household income is enough or more than enough to cover all their expenses.

“My salary in Vietnam is similar to home, but the cost of living is very low,” one Australian expat told the survey.

Money is important – but where are the best destinations overall?

Following Bahrain are Taiwan and Ecuador, with Taiwan ranking well in terms of friendliness and job satisfaction.

However, 30 per cent of expats in Taiwan admit that learning the language is a challenge.

Ecuador performed well financially and in terms of settling in. However, many expats there are retirees, with 20 per cent of expats relocating to Ecuador purely for the quality of life.

“I love the kindness of the Ecuadorians. They have been helpful and gracious from the first day,” another expat told the survey.
