Fall and winter come around every year, but that doesn't mean you have to actually shop for new outerwear pieces each season. If you shop thoughtfully, all you need is the perfect timeless pieces that easily pair with everything you already own and, best of all, they'll last you a lifetime.

This is the ultimate key to saving money and keeping yourself from spending carelessly during the holiday season.

When it comes to shopping for the best men's outerwear pieces, a few brands come to mind for their supreme quality, approachable price points and unmatched durability. From a super versatile, insulated and stylish North Face jacket to Koio's new shearling-lined leather boots, these are pieces you only need to buy once and will wear over and over again for years to come.

Whenever someone asks me to share my top men's coat and jacket recommendations, Buck Mason usually always lands in my top five. Its simplistic yet never basic styles and silhouettes paired with premium materials and thoughtful construction make these outerwear pieces the true epitome of timeless.

The brand's Dry Waxed Canvas N1 Deck Jacket is one of my new favorites. If you're looking for a classic outerwear piece that stops right at the waist and works for both casual and formal looks, this is the one to buy.

It has a classic fit that's a bit boxy in the most flattering way and is blanket-lined for warmth that you won't expect from the outside looking in. The jacket's cut from 14 oz. waxed cotton canvas and has a corduroy collar. Sizes range from XS to XXL.

2. Polo Ralph Lauren Polo Wool-Blend Melton Peacoat, $489.99 (Orig. $598)

The peacoat is another men's outerwear staple that doesn't get enough credit. It usually has a standard, straight fit, making it perfect for a range of body types, and has lined pockets and reinforced anchor-motif buttons.

This one from Ralph Lauren is an updated take on the famous jacket that's been around for years and years. The brand's take on the classic peacoat is tailored from an Italian wool blend and finished with signature corozo buttons. It comes in short, regular and long lengths and 12 chest sizes, ranging from 32 to 54.

3. The North Face Men's RMST Nuptse Jacket, $500

$500 at The North Face

We can't discuss the best men's outerwear staples without mentioning one of the world's most trusted and premium outerwear brands: The North Face. When one speaks of jackets and coats as true investment pieces that last a lifetime, this brand arguably ranks at the top of that list.

The North Face recently released a remastered version of one of its most iconic silhouettes. The relaxed-fit Men's RMST Nuptse Jacket combines the brand's trusted high-alpine features with a classic, streetwear-reminiscent style you can wear anywhere. It has a boxy, slightly oversized fit that complements any body shape and is the ultimate cold-weather essential for the man who likes having one jacket that does it all.

4. Koio Brixen Boots, $425

What's the point in keeping your body warm if your feet are still freezing? Gone are the days when insulated fall and winter boots had to be clunky and unflattering. Koio's newly released Brixen boots prove that fashion and function blend perfectly when designed correctly.

This new hiking-inspired boot was handcrafted in Italy from vegetable-tanned leather and is lined with insulating shearling to keep your feet warm in style. It also has a comfortable padded collar and hooked eyelets for easy and secure lacing.

The new Koio Brixen Boots also have the brand's ArcticLug sole that provides traction on even the slickest city sidewalks, ensuring that you don't slip when the snow turns to ice.

If the brown (Mocha) color isn't your style, it also comes in black. Sizes range from seven to 16.

5. Rothy’s Chelsea Boot, $139 (Orig. $259)

$179 $259 at Rothy's

The Rothy’s Chelsea Boot has been one of my favorites for years now and it’s one of the ultimate men’s outerwear staples. While traditional Chelsea boots are beautiful to look at and elevate just about any look, they’re not very practical when worn in the fall and winter months.

Rothy’s found a way to make a Chelsea boot that has the sleek and sophisticated silhouette we all love about the popular shoe with the traction and structure of a more rugged boot. This is all in the merino wool construction and supportive insoles with lugs on the bottom for extra grip and durability.

Plus, did we mention that these are also 100% machine-washable? So, when they get scuffed or covered in snow, just toss them in the washing machine and they’ll be as good as new in no time.

6. Rothy's Slipper, $149

$149 at Rothy's

For those days when you just want a comfortable slip-on shoe that keeps your feet warm while also making the most flattering fashion statement, Rothy's new men's Slipper is the best pick.

Giving an upgrade to the boring men's fall and winter slippers we've all seen, Rothy's created these from a blend of knit, premium merino wool and its signature thread. The result is this luxe slipper with a soft sherpa lining and sturdy outsoles.

These are suitable for both indoor and outdoor wear and come in three colors (black and camel plaid, mountain gray, as pictured above, and nutmeg).

7. Mack Weldon Ace Sweatpant, $78

Lastly, we can’t forget about the bottoms. For the best men’s outerwear, Mack Weldon’s Ace Sweatpant is one of the few we’ve found that don’t actually look like lazy sweatpants. In fact, if you’re looking for that “dress pants look” in sweatpants form, these are the ones to buy.

These have a more tailored, tapered fit that doesn’t look slouchy like typical sweatpants. They also have back-ribbed ankle cuffs and come in a micro-brushed French terry material that’s perfect for fall and winter.

Choose from 15 different colors, two fits (regular and tall) and five sizes, ranging from S to XXL.
