TikTokers have opinions about this ‘watermelon’ hack: ‘Just eat a watermelon’

A TikToker posted a bizarre “watermelon hack” involving a cucumber, and the Internet had a lot to say.

Janelle Rohner (@janellerohner) is a TikTok chef who specializes in keto-friendly recipes. With 4 million followers to her name, Rohner has built a strong, loyal following with her tasty, low-carb dishes. But one of her recent “hacks” has mostly been a recipe for confusion.

“I was today-years-old when I learned that if you dip a cucumber in sugar, it tastes like watermelon,” the TikToker said. Janelle then proceeds to dip a cucumber in sugar (she used Stevia) before taking a bite.

“What in the h***?!” exclaimed the pleasantly surprised chef, before motioning for her followers to try it out.

TikTokers have thoughts

The clip, which has been viewed 16 million times, caused a great deal of confusion among viewers. The general consensus being that, instead of dipping a cucumber in sugar to mimic the taste of a watermelon, it probably makes more sense to just … eat a watermelon.

“You know what else tastes like a watermelon? A watermelon,” wrote one logical TikToker.

“Or you could just eat… idk… actual watermelon,” commented another skeptical user.

“Just eat a watermelon, it’s healthier,” suggested another viewer.

Watermelon is actually loaded with health benefits. The high water content in watermelon makes it a hydrating snack, and the vitamins in watermelon can help improve your skin and hair! Also, while many fruits have a high carb count, watermelon is one of the few fruits suggested for those who are following the keto diet.

So even if you’re cutting down on carbs, and you’re craving the taste of watermelon, you can probably leave the cucumber and sugar on the shelf and just have a slice of the fruit itself.

While viewers were quick to dismiss Rohner’s “hack,” Rohner herself made it clear that cukes dipped in sugar were not meant as a replacement for watermelon. While responding to a comment, Rohner explained that she wanted to try the trick out after seeing it on TikTok.

Clearly, this discovery is far from life-changing, but aren’t you at least a little curious to see if it works?
