Yahoo Finance College student slammed on TikTok for 'trashy' marriage proposal: 'What a scam'
You’ve probably pretended it was your birthday to get a free dessert at a restaurant at least once before, but would you fake a marriage proposal for free drinks?
That’s been the question of the week after a TikTok post about two strangers pretending to get engaged resurfaced on Reddit.
“So we met this random guy at Texas live last night and planned a fake proposal with him,” user @scandyyland, whose name is Shelbi, wrote in the original video.
In the footage, a man in a gray hoodie kneeled on the floor of a bar in front of a woman in a black jacket, who is Shelbi’s friend Liz. As they embraced, the people surrounding them erupted in applause and raised their drinks to honor the seemingly engaged pair.
“People we didn’t even know got so hype about it and made it so fun,” Shelbi said.
She added that the couple and their friends “got free drinks for the rest of the night.” That’s what people took issue with.
Though the original video first went viral in January, it picked up steam again in April when it was shared to Reddit’s r/Trashy forum. Users implied it wasn’t exactly ethically sound.
“This is how you make the restaurant/bar stop doing stuff like this and ruin it for everyone else,” one user said.
“What a scam, comes with TikTok points though.” another wrote.
Others defended the fake proposal all for the sake of good fun.
“If anything they made the night more fun for everyone there,” one Reddit commented.
“I’ve been with people that have done this. It’s harmless fun not trashy,” another said.
Over on TikTok, folks were mainly excited to see if the fake couple would become a real couple.
“So when y’all fall in love and he proposes it better be in the same spot,” one user wrote.
Shelbi shared an update on their relationship a day after the original video was posted. She said she literally hasn’t seen Liz since then because she’s been spending so much time with her fake fiancé. Liz even met his parents.
“He’s a really nice guy and she has our approval,” Shelbi said.
No matter what happens, this is shaping up to be an excellent Netflix original movie.
