Yahoo Finance Kylie Jenner accused of Photoshopping 'dangerous' bikini pictures: 'I just don't understand'
The Kardashian-Jenner family is notorious for their alleged Photoshop fails. Notably, what appeared to be an unretouched photo of Khloe Kardashian began circulating in early April, and all hands were on deck as her PR team allegedly tried to wipe it from the internet.
Around the same time frame, TikTok user @residualdata shared a video about a series of Kylie Jenner’s photos in which the reality star was wearing a yellow bikini.
“Miss Kylie Jenner posted these photos to her social the other day and unfortunately they appear to be Photoshopped,” the user claimed. “These edits are so small and so imperceptible that I think it makes it much more dangerous.”
@residualdata then showed two close-up photos of Jenner from the shoot — in one, the curtains beside her waist look wavy where it is “cinched” and again where her hips “give her an hourglass shape,” whereas the curtains looked straight in the other shot. She claimed that was a sign the photo had been Photoshopped.
“This is not a dig on Kylie Jenner personally. It is her entire brand to look perfect, that’s just how she makes money,” @residualdata explained.
She said it’s not a victimless crime, though, and shared something called “social comparison theory” with her followers. The concept suggests that people often compare themselves to others in ways in which objective measures do not exist.
When this happens to women who compare their appearance to celebrities, they often fall short and end up dissatisfied, which can be harmful in many ways.
When Khloe Kardashian’s seemingly unretouched photos leaked, social media users were shocked to see how quickly her team acted to say the photo was unauthorized and “accidentally posted.” Khloe even took to Instagram Live to put her “real” body on display.
“My body, my image and how I choose to look and what I want to share is my choice. It’s not for anyone to decide or judge what is acceptable anymore,” she told her followers.
“Your family is responsible for setting those unrealistic standards,” one user wrote in response to her post.
Jenner’s critics shared similar thoughts on @residualdata’s TikTok post.
“I just don’t understand the need to please another’s eye. Social media has messed up so many young girls,” one user wrote.
“When I was 14 I had a whole folder of these pics as motivation to lose weight. I wish I would have known it was Photoshop back then,” another said.
Multiple commenters pointed out that Jenner is not responsible for anyone she might “trigger” with her body, and @residualdata explained why she disagreed with them.
“Influencers are called that because it is their entire job to ‘influence’ people to act a certain way to be like them,” she wrote.
The Kardashian-Jenner family may be subjected to unrealistic beauty standards as gorgeous celebrities, but there’s no denying they played a role in creating those standards in the first place.
