TikTok vet exposes ‘scary’ secret the pet food industry doesn’t want you to know: ‘Literally the devil’

Pet owners want the best for their furry friends and that includes giving them the healthiest options for food.

Pet food spending accumulates tens of millions of dollars annually and within recent years there’s been a shift to shelling out more money to buy food that’s labeled “organic” or free from artificial ingredients. The days of generic puppy kibble are over.

As the industry tries to figure out how much pet owners are willing to spend on food, bigger companies are buying up these smaller, “healthier” ones — like when General Mills bought Blue Buffalo in 2019.

But there’s a lot of frightening behind-the-scenes action factored into this new wave of healthy pet food — a lot of which is perhaps not so healthy after all.

Andrew Woods is a veterinarian on TikTok and YouTube who posts videos explaining certain common animal behaviors and even answers questions from commenters. One of his video series on TikTok exposes the dangers of what pet food companies do not want owners to know.

Part one of the series stars Woods in his scrubs and he begins the video saying that the FDA has started an investigation into a suspicious link between people feeding their dogs grain-free food and dogs developing dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).

“Dilated cardiomyopathy is a horrible heart condition when the heart valves get too big and they can’t pump blood effectively,” Woods explains.

After further investigations, Woods says that the FDA has discovered that the link is not even exclusive to grain-free dog food, it’s also found in boutique and exotic food too.

“You know those dog food brands that are super expensive and have really Earthy things in the background?” Woods asked. “Yeah, that’s probably a [boutique, exotic, grain-free] diet.”

Woods lists out brands of dog food that should be replaced as soon as possible: ACANE, Zignature, Taste of the Wild, 4Health, Earthborn Holistic, Blue Buffalo, Nature’s Domain, FROMM, Merrick, California Natural, Natural Balance, Orijen, Nature’s Variety, NutriSource, NUTRO and Rachael Ray Nutrish.

“Talk to your vet about switching,” he says. “Or at least until we know more about what exactly is causing these dogs to develop DCM or how we can fix it.

A lot of dog lovers defended the grain-free diet in the comments section, claiming that Woods was only saying this to get more money as a vet.

“VETS MAKE COMMISSION ON SCIENCE DIET!!! THAT’S THE ONLY REASON THEY SELL YOU IT!!!!!!” one person wrote.

“Where’s all these commissioned vets at?? I’m broke lmao,” Woods replied.

Others backed up the claims with personal stories.

“100% happened to my dog,” someone said. “He had a murmur but then the food change totally sped up the process.”

“My Master’s thesis was on the pet food industry. It’s pretty scary the stuff they put in the food and marketing is all psychological,” a commenter explained.

“Blue Buffalo is literally the devil,” another person said.
