Tiger Woods reportedly had no recollection of the moments before his car crash last week, nor did he have any memory of being behind the wheel at all according to new reports.

The golf superstar remains in hospital after suffering serious leg injuries in the single-car crash in Los Angeles, which is now under investigation.

The 45-year-old was cleared of drug or alcohol impairment at the scene after police officers at the scene said there was no evidence he was under the influence of either.

Police obtained a search warrant for the black box of the SUV Woods, with the warrant finding Woods had no memory of driving a car or the crash whatsoever when he awoke in the driver's seat.

The documents, obtained and reported on by CNN, noted Woods told officers he had "no recollection" of the incident.

"The deputies asked him how the collision occurred. Driver said he did not know and did not even remember driving," the affidavit read.

"Driver was treated for his injuries at the hospital and was asked there again how the collision occurred. He repeated that he did not know and did not remember driving."

Investigators would not say what they were looking for, but in the days after the crash have been trying to determine what caused Woods, 45, to lose control of the vehicle.

"Traffic collision investigators are continuing the investigation into the cause of the collision involving Mr. Woods," Deputy Trina Schrader said in a statement emailed to Reuters on Wednesday.

"On March 1, 2021, they executed a search warrant to retrieve data from the vehicles 'black box.' At this time, there is no additional information regarding the recovered data."

Woods was negotiating a curved, downhill stretch of highway that authorities have said was notoriously dangerous when the luxury SUV veered across the opposite lanes, collided with a road sign and rolled several times.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said last week that he did not anticipate filing any criminal charges in connection with the accident.

Tiger Woods recovering after leg surgery

Woods, celebrated as one of golf's all-time greats, had to be pried from the crumpled SUV through the shattered windshield.

Woods is the only modern professional to win all four major golf titles in succession, taking the US Open, British Open and PGA Championship in 2000 and the Masters title in 2001, a feat that became known as the "Tiger Slam."

His 15 major titles stand second only to the record 18 won by Jack Nicklaus.

But he has suffered years of injuries and undergone multiple surgeries on his back and knees, limiting his ability to compete.

A post from the golfer's Twitter account said the 45-year-old "received follow-up procedures" on his injuries at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre on Friday morning.

"The procedures were successful, and he is now recovering and in good spirits," the tweet signed TGR added.

Open fractures to the 45-year-old's tibia and fibula and further injuries to his foot and ankle were stabilised during surgery with the insertion of a rod, screws and pins.

The severity of the injuries, coupled with the fact that he was already sidelined following a fifth back operation, leaves the prospects of the 15-time major winner being able to return to action hanging in the balance.
